Rachel Coleman
Independent Educational Consultant & Writing Tutor Rachel is a perpetual reader who loves to empower students to effectively communicate their ideas in writing. After graduating from Stanford University with a degree in Comparative Literature in 2014, Rachel earned her College Counseling Certificate from UCLA. It was not so long ago that she was completing her own college applications and is intimately familiar with the questions and challenges that accompany this process. Her time at Stanford even included a year studying abroad at Oxford University where she indulged her anglophile yearnings and spent most of her time in the Bodleian Library. Rachel also tutored for three years at Stanford’s Hume Center for Writing and Speaking, culminating in leading the Hume as the Peer Tutor Coordinator her senior year. From research proposals, to resumes and cover letters, to essays in all disciplines, Rachel is fluent in the coaching process and knows what it takes to help students tell their stories. Rachel works with students from around the world entirely via Zoom to coach them through the whole application process, from creating a fantastic college list to earning scholarships. "One year ago, I never imagined that I would be where I am today--specifically at the front steps of a Stanford experience. My family and I would like to thank you Rachel for all you have done as I prepare to head for Palo Alto."
- Mingqian, Student Our family had a wonderful experience working with Rachel and we feel extremely blessed . Our two children are very different from one another in terms of academics, personal style, and college goals, and Rachel was able to work with each in their own unique way. She was calm, upbeat, wise, thoughtful, honest, well-informed, experienced, intelligent, humorous, and the perfect mix of firm and gentle to help our kids stay on track throughout the college application process. Rachel even counseled us through academic decisions for our child who switched schools twice in high school. We are very happy with the outcomes for both children, who are attending colleges that are excellent matches to their personalities and academic goals. We were able to make it through two application seasons with a minimum of family tension or fighting, and Rachel made this possible. She is a gem! -parents "Rachel, our son received the Appointment Letter today for the Air Force Academy! My dad and brother both tried and were not successful...but they didn’t have you as an admissions coach did they?" - Jack, parent |
Rachel was wonderful as she shepherded both of our kids through the college admission process. Because of their different interests, there was very little overlap in their respective target lists, yet both found their spots and had very positive experiences. Rachel’s knowledge of schools and their programs is extremely vast, and her approach helped demystify what would otherwise possibly be an unwieldy process. In very manageable chunks, she helped both of our girls identify the important variables in the selection process, research schools through the lens of their preferences, create a list of potential schools, manage that list by paring it down, write their applications, and finally be clear and confident about the decision each was making. Despite the expected uncertainty and all that brings, the process was methodical, organized, super smooth, and extremely effective. Rachel was always accessible and responsive, encouraging and constructive. She maintained great communication throughout, ensuring that the kids led the process and the parents stayed in the loop. We would highly recommend Rachel to any college bound high school student/family in a heartbeat.
-parents Nicholas left for school this morning with his Junior Paper completed on time. More importantly, he shared with me last night that he really enjoyed the process. Rachel, you are the reason for the breakthrough! I cannot thank you enough! You truly delivered above and beyond all my expectations. - Patricia, parent |
