Campus Culture

Insider Opinions
Although a college counselor like me visits lots of schools, my opinion and experience there are not the same as the opinions of current and former students of that particular college or university. Of course, what you read and hear on the following sites is opinion rather than fact, but it can be useful when combined with more statistical information to give you a good feel for the culture of a given campus:
  • College Confidential gives you a chance to "get the campus vibe" and contribute your own visit report, photos or videos. Create an account and join discussion forums with current and prospective students
  • College Prowler: By Students, For Students is their tagline. I use this site to input a specific college and read what students are saying about it
  • Unigo: I always thought this was short for "You and I Go" but a college counseling colleague told me she thought it was short for "University Go". Either way, I use this site to read student reviews for specific colleges

LGBT Friendly Schools
If you are lesbian, gay, bi-sexual or transgender, or simply want to be at a school that is open and accepting of these students, then check out the resources that review LGBT campus culture:
  • The Consortium of Higher Education LGBT Resource Professionals provides a list of schools that have a paid LGBT center staff person
  • Check out the LGBT-friendly Campus Climate Index
  • Campus Pride promotes LGBT leadership opportunities and event organizing
  • The University of Pennsylvania has a fabulous Career Planning and Job Search Guide for LGBT Students
  • College Express provides this gay-friendly college list
  • Campus Pride Index of Best Colleges for LGBTQ Students
